Final Cut Pro 10.0.1 release today. One of the most exciting features is xml import and export. That may make FinalSub working with Final Cut Pro X. We are working on it.

Rich XML Support

Now you can import and export Final Cut Pro X project and Event information via a rich XML format. XML interchange enables a wide range of third-party workflows, including high-end visual effects, color grading, and media asset management. Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve, Square Box System’s CatDV, and many other third-party applications will offer XML-based workflows with Final Cut Pro X.

When work with NTSC or something like 23.97, 29.97 frame rate format, VTR will drop frames automatically. But Non-linear just works with integer frames. So, Final Cut Pro take Drop Frames as default when we work with VTR or output or export occasions.

Then the problem comes that when you send Finalsub result to Final Cut Pro, the subtitles won’t sync with video. That’s because the Drop Frame setting. So, please, when you work with NTSC or non integer frame rate sequences, follow the following 3 steps:

1. Before exporting a quicktime movie, choose Final Cut Pro menu “Sequence-Settings…” 2. Click on label “Timeline Options” and make sure the “Drop Frame” is not checked.

3. Before you output your sequence to VTR tape, please check the “Drop frames”.

Thanks to Mr. Su in Taibei to tell us this solution for drop frames.

If you ever got the following Irregular timecode, how can you transform them to the Finalsub format or SRT/STL format, or even Adobe Encore Text Script format?

00:00:00:00
00:00:00.00
<00/00/00;00>
[00;00;00;00]
{00,00,00,00}
(00.00,00;00)
<00.00.00.00}

With Finalsub, you just choose menu “Tools-Convert Timecode Format”, Finalsub will convert all irregular timecode to the Finalsub format: [00:00:00.00]. You can now export the subtitles to Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Adobe Encore or SRT files.

But if you got a file like below. It’s different from FinalSub. How can we transform them?

00:03:56:17 00:04:01:00 I bet you did.
00:04:02:21 00:04:05:24 Who cares?
00:04:06:01 00:04:08:13 You’d better not to go.
00:04:08:15 00:04:10:03 It’s out of control.
00:04:10:06 00:04:15:10 Dangerous everywhere.
00:04:15:13 00:04:18:18 How can I make it?
00:04:18:20 00:04:21:21 Think about it.

All we need to do it paste them to Finalsub, choose menu “Tools-Convert Timecode Format”. Then select all and copy, under the “Hand” mode, press delete to delete timecode only. After that, choose menu “Edit-Replace the selected timecode”.

Some times, after we authoring a DVD or making a final output movie, we want to do a multi language subtitle. We already have all the timecode made in Finalsub, or we have a SRT file already. How can we easily make a multi language subtitle file?

With FinalSub, it’s super easy! Make sure the other language text is exactly the same lines to original one. Copy them, return to FinalSub, Select all the content you want to replace with, Choose menu “Edit-Replace the selected text(Command+option+v)” .

Finalsub will retain the timecode and replace the text. Then you can send the subtitles to Final Cut Pro or export to SRT file.

If you have a SRT file, just import the corresponding movie, then load the SRT file by choosing Finalsub menu “File-Load SRT file”. Do the samething above.
